Course Information

The GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) Package Offshore serves as an excellent foundation for those looking to enter the wind industry. This package includes five key GWO training courses essential for individuals pursuing job opportunities in the wind industry.

This course includes:

  • Fire Awareness

  • First Aid

  • Working at Heights

  • Manual Handling

  • Sea Survival

By completing the GWO BST Offshore Package, you’ll be prepared to meet the safety standards and demands of the wind industry, positioning yourself as a qualified and competent candidate for various roles in this growing sector.

These modules are applicable for offshore wind environments.

Core Modules Included in the Basic Safety Training BST

The GWO basic safety training BST offshore package covers five core modules. Each module includes theoretical and practical training, ensuring delegates can apply learning in realistic scenarios. Successful completion of all five modules leads to a bundled GWO certificate recognised across all GWO member organisations worldwide. The five core modules are First Aid, Fire Awareness, Working at Heights, Manual Handling, and Sea Survival. The Sea Survival module is specific to the offshore BST and is required for anyone working in or around offshore wind installations.

  • The GWO first aid module trains delegates to administer safe and effective aid in the wind turbine environment. Aid training covers patient assessment, CPR, AED use, wound management, and dealing with shock and fractures. Delegates must demonstrate their ability to manage a casualty scenario, initiate emergency assistance, and use basic personal protective equipment correctly. Assessment focuses on the ability to make appropriate judgements under pressure and administer safe care in a WTG environment.

  • The fire awareness module addresses fire hazards specific to the wind turbine environment. Delegates learn to identify fire hazards early, take correct preventive actions, and use basic handheld firefighting equipment to efficiently extinguish an initial fire. Practical training includes smoke evacuation drills and emergency breathing exercises. Delegates also learn to manage evacuation procedures and recognise when an unmanageable fire requires full evacuation rather than intervention.

  • GWO working at heights training covers harness inspection, fall arrest systems, and safe anchor point use. Practical training includes suspended-rescue drills and live-casualty rescue scenarios. Delegates must demonstrate competence through scenario-based assessments in a remote wind turbine environment, covering ladder safety, fall prevention, and emergency response protocols.

  • The manual handling module addresses one of the most common causes of musculoskeletal injuries in the wind turbine industry. Training covers safe lifting planning, task risk assessment, and correct lifting technique exercises. Delegates learn to take correct preventive actions before a lift, identify when mechanical assistance is needed, and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries throughout their career.

  • The GWO sea survival module equips delegates with practical survival skills for offshore environments. Practical training includes immersion suit donning, life raft deployment, water-entry techniques, and raft boarding drills. The sea survival module also covers transfer procedures between installation vessels and offshore platforms, man-overboard response, and recognised rescue methods, ensuring personnel can act safely throughout offshore operations.

Why Basic Safety Training Matters for Wind Workers

Employers across the wind energy sector require proof of GWO basic safety training before deploying personnel to any wind turbine generator site. The GWO basic safety training standard was developed by the Global Wind Organisation to establish a consistent, internationally recognised benchmark for safety competence. By following GWO training standards, operators and contractors can be confident that all personnel have received the same level of theoretical and practical training. For offshore operations, where rescue services may be far away, this safety training is critical. Completing GWO basic safety training ensures workers can administer safe responses, take correct preventive actions, and make appropriate judgements in emergencies.

  • GWO Basic Safety Training is suitable for any personnel looking to start a career in the wind industry.

    • GWO Fire Awareness - This training is a vital component of ensuring the safety and well-being of professionals working in the wind industry. This comprehensive training equips delegates with essential knowledge about the potential hazards they may encounter in their line of work, specifically related to fire incidents. During the training, delegates learn about the various fire risks that can arise within the unique environment of the wind industry. They become familiar with the different types of fires that can occur and the factors that contribute to their development.

    • GWO First Aid - Administering safe and effective first aid in the wind turbine industry is of paramount importance to ensure the well-being of workers and to respond promptly to any emergencies that might arise. During the training sessions, participants will gain comprehensive knowledge on crucial subjects such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), administering basic first aid, adept assessment and communication, initiating emergency assistance, and effectively employing Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).

    • GWO Working at Heights - This training addresses the unique challenges and risks associated with tasks performed at heights in wind turbine environments. Participants will acquire understanding in areas including Personal Fall Arrest Equipment, measures for preventing falls, ladder usage safety, individual and colleague rescue and protocols for handling emergencies.

    • GWO Manual Handling - Practising safe manual handling practises and the risks associated in performing incorrect techniques.

    • GWO Sea Survival - equips participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to travel safely to and from offshore wind installations. The course ensures delegates fully understand the survival procedures required when working in and around wind turbines — with a strong focus on offshore transit and safe transfers between vessels and installations. Delegates will learn how to take a proactive, prevention-first approach from the moment they step onto the quay for departure until they return safely. This includes the correct use of safety aids, rescue equipment, and recognised rescue methods.

    • A valid WINDA ID is required.

    • Safety footwear is required for all practical sessions.

    • A general standard of fitness is required.

    • Photographic ID Card, such as a drivers licence or passport.

  • Upon completion of the course, delegates will be awarded with GWO approved certification for all four modules, Fire Awareness, First Aid, Working at Height and Manual Handling.
Certification is valid for 2 years, prior to expiry delegates must redo the refresher course to remain certified.

  • Registration and Welcome: The day typically begins with registration, where participants confirm their attendance and receive any necessary training materials or equipment.
Safety Briefing: A safety briefing is conducted to highlight the importance of adhering to safety protocols throughout the training session and in our centre.
Catering: Lunch will be provided to all delegates on the full day but not the 0.5 day.

  • Participants or individuals booking the course are responsible for ensuring that they meet all the necessary prerequisites and provide the required evidence, such as valid certificates for revalidation courses, on the first day of the course.

Failure to fulfill any of these prerequisites may lead to the participant being requested to leave the course. Please note that no refunds will be issued in such cases.

  • The GWO basic safety training BST offshore course runs over 4.5 days at our Salford training centre. Training days begin with registration and a safety briefing, followed by a mix of theoretical and practical training sessions. Lunch is provided on full training days. Delegates should bring comfortable clothing suitable for practical exercises and their safety footwear. Personal protective equipment for each module is provided on site.

Assessment Methods and Records Management

Each module is assessed through practical skill demonstrations and theory components. Delegates must demonstrate competence in realistic scenarios, managing a casualty, using basic handheld firefighting equipment, or performing a rescue from height. Following successful completion, results are recorded in WINDA in line with GWO training standards. Delegates should confirm their WINDA record has been updated within a few days of their completion date.
