GWO Manual Handling Course
What Is GWO Manual Handling?
GWO Manual Handling is a globally recognised safety training standard developed by the Global Wind Organisation to enable participants working in the wind industry to perform manual handling tasks safely and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Manual handling refers to transporting or supporting loads by hand or bodily force, including lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, or carrying. It is one of the most common causes of workplace injury across all sectors, and the risk is heightened in demanding physical environments such as wind turbine sites.
The GWO manual handling module combines theoretical and practical training to equip wind turbine technicians and site personnel with the knowledge and skills to perform manual handling tasks in a safe and sound manner. Participants learn essential manual handling principles, ergonomic techniques, and basic risk assessment methods tailored specifically to the wind turbine environment.

Course Information
The GWO Manual Handling training is a course designed to equip individuals in the industry with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle objects and perform tasks in a way that minimises the risk of injuries related to lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
Participants will explore subjects including correct lifting methods, secure carrying and transportation, risk evaluations, and injury prevention techniques. GWO Manual Handling is a mandatory training course for all personnel working in the wind industry.
Why GWO Manual Handling Training Matters
Poor manual handling techniques are a major cause of musculoskeletal injuries at work, placing unnecessary strain on the spine, joints, and muscles with potentially lasting consequences. Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, employers must avoid hazardous manual handling operations wherever reasonably practicable and reduce risk through mechanical aids, training, and control measures. GWO manual handling training supports employers in meeting these legislative requirements while aligning with recognised training standards across the wind turbine industry.
The aim of GWO manual handling training is to enable participants to perform manual handling tasks in the safest possible way. The course covers essential risk reduction techniques, correct posture, use of mechanical aids, and the TILE method for assessing risks associated with manual handling tasks, giving workers the knowledge and skills to operate safely in a wind turbine environment.

This GWO manual handling course is designed for anyone working in or entering the wind turbine industry, including offshore and onshore technicians, site personnel, and workers whose work duties involve performing physical tasks in a wind turbine environment. It is a core module of the GWO Basic Safety Training programme and is required by most wind farm operators before personnel can carry out job tasks on site. Participants in GWO manual handling training must meet GWO Requirements for Training and demonstrate fitness to perform the practical exercises included in the course.

Manual Handling Risk Assessment
A manual handling risk assessment is a structured process used to assess the risks associated with specific manual handling tasks. It takes into account the task itself, the load, the working environment, and the individual. Where hazardous operations cannot be avoided, employers must put control measures in place to reduce risk. GWO manual handling training teaches participants to carry out effective assessments and apply practical guidance to their own wind turbine environment.
Certification
Upon successful completion, delegates receive a GWO manual handling certificate valid for 2 years. Certification should be renewed before the end of the validity period, and certificates can be renewed up to two months prior to expiry while maintaining the original certification date. Updates to the GWO Basic Safety Training standards are valid until 10 September 2026, during which the previous version will remain valid.
