GWO Working at Height and Manual Handling

Course Overview

The GWO Working at Height and Manual Handling training course combines two critical safety modules into one efficient programme, equipping personnel in the wind industry with the skills to work safely at height while performing manual handling tasks in a wind turbine environment. This combined course is ideal for those needing a manual handling combined refresher or initial certification in both disciplines.

This combined training course delivers both theoretical and practical training, focusing on safe practices, risk awareness, and correct procedures when working at height and carrying out manual handling tasks. Designed in line with GWO training standards, the course ensures participants can apply correct manual handling techniques while using height safety systems such as fall arrest lanyards, guided type fall arresters, and work positioning lanyards.

Delegates will build on previously gained knowledge or develop new competencies to safely perform job tasks in a safe and sound manner, reducing the risk of injuries related to poor manual handling techniques and working at height.

Course Information

This course combines both Working at Height and Manual Handling into one course.

Working at Height addresses the unique challenges and risks associated with tasks performed at heights in wind turbine environments. Participants will gain understanding in areas including Personal Fall Arrest Equipment, measures for preventing falls, ladder usage safety, individual and colleague rescue and protocols for handling emergencies.

GWO Manual Handling training is designed to equip individuals in the industry with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle objects and perform tasks in a way that minimises the risk of injuries related to lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

Working at Height Training and Rescue Skills

The GWO working at height element focuses on the safe use of personal protective equipment, including harnesses, anchor points, and evacuation devices. Participants will learn how to identify hazards and risks associated with working at height and demonstrate correct use of safety systems.

Training includes comprehensive basic rescue techniques, enabling participants to approach rescue situations confidently and use rescue equipment efficiently. Delegates will practice responding to emergency scenarios and learn how to work safely in a variety of environments across different geographic work locations.

Manual Handling Training and Safe Practices

The manual handling component focuses on developing correct handling techniques and promoting positive manual handling behaviours. Participants will learn how to identify aspects of tasks that could increase risk and apply a problem solving approach to manual handling.

The course covers safe practices of manual handling, ergonomic behaviour, and the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries. Delegates will also learn to identify signs and symptoms of injuries related to poor manual handling techniques and understand how to apply risk reduction techniques in their daily work duties.

  • This course is suitable for personnel working in the wind turbine industry who are required to carry out work duties at height while also performing physical tasks. It is particularly relevant for technicians operating within a wind turbine generator, where both height safety and manual handling risks are present.

It is also ideal for those needing a combined refresher and who already hold valid or in date GWO Working at Height or manual handling certifications.

  • Demonstrate correct manual handling techniques.
Comprehending the potential hazards associated with improper manual handling techniques.
Correctly use personal fall protection equipment (PFPE).
Conducting work at heights while ensuring safety.
Carry out a safe basic height rescue operation in a remote wind turbine environment, while following the Working at Heights standards established by The GWO.

    • A valid WINDA ID is required.

    • Safety footwear is required for all practical sessions.

    • A general standard of fitness is required.

    • Photographic ID Card, such as a drivers licence or passport.

  • After successfully finishing the course, participants will receive a GWO-approved Manual Handling and Working at Height certificate, which remains valid for a duration of two years. To maintain their certification, delegates are required to undergo GWO Manual Handling and Working at Height Training again before the certificate's expiration date.

  • A strong emphasis is placed on practical training, allowing participants to apply their knowledge in realistic scenarios. Delegates will perform manual handling tasks, demonstrate correct identification of risks, and practice working at height using relevant PPE and equipment.

This hands-on approach ensures participants can demonstrate understanding, apply correct procedures, and carry out tasks in a safe manner in accordance with industry standards.

  • Registration and Welcome: The day typically begins with registration, where participants confirm their attendance and receive any necessary training materials or equipment.
Safety Briefing: A safety briefing is conducted to highlight the importance of adhering to safety protocols throughout the training session and in our centre.
Catering: Lunch will be provided to all delegates.

  • Participants or individuals booking the course are responsible for ensuring that they meet all the necessary prerequisites and provide the required evidence, such as valid certificates for revalidation courses, on the first day of the course.

Failure to fulfill any of these prerequisites may lead to the participant being requested to leave the course. Please note that no refunds will be issued in such cases.

Safety, PPE and Legislative Requirements

Participants will be trained in the correct use of basic personal protective equipment and relevant PPE required for both modules. The course also covers key legislative requirements, reporting methods, and workplace safety expectations within the renewables sector. Understanding hazards and risks associated with both working at height and manual handling is essential for maintaining safety across all job tasks.

Certification, Validity and Refresher Training

Upon successful completion, delegates receive GWO approved working at height and manual handling certifications, which are recorded in WINDA. These certifications typically have a set validity period, after which a refresher course must be completed. Participants within the grace period may be eligible for a combined refresher, allowing them to renew both certifications efficiently.

Booking and Course Information

The height and manual handling combined course is delivered at accredited training centres with access to specialist equipment and facilities. Delegates completing the course should ensure they meet all entry requirements and bring appropriate PPE where required.
