GWO Manual Handling Refresher

Course Overview

The GWO Manual Handling Refresher course is designed to renew and strengthen the knowledge and skills required to safely perform manual handling tasks in the wind turbine environment. This refresher training ensures participants remain compliant with Global Wind Organisation standards while reinforcing safe practices that help prevent injury.

This manual handling refresher training builds on previously gained knowledge from the initial GWO manual handling module. Through a combination of theoretical and practical training, participants revisit key principles of safe handling, risk awareness, and ergonomic behaviour. The course focuses on enabling delegates to carry out work duties in a safe and sound manner, reducing the risk of developing muscular skeletal injuries caused by poor manual handling techniques.

Course Information

The GWO Manual Handling training is a programme designed to equip individuals in the industry with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle objects and perform tasks in a way that minimises the risk of injuries related to lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

Participants will explore subjects including correct lifting methods, secure carrying and transportation, risk evaluations, and injury prevention techniques.

Practical Training and Safe Practices

A strong focus is placed on practical training, where participants will perform manual handling tasks and demonstrate correct techniques. The training encourages positive manual handling behaviours and promotes a problem solving approach to manual handling challenges. This includes applying safe practices, understanding manual handling risk, and adapting techniques to suit different work duties and environments.

Risk Reduction and Injury Prevention

The course reinforces the importance of risk controls and behavioural safety when carrying out manual handling tasks. Participants will learn how to prevent injury by recognising hazards, applying safe practices, and following correct procedures in accordance with legislative requirements. Understanding the risks of poor manual handling and how to manage them effectively is key to maintaining safety in the workplace.

  • This course is suitable for personnel in the wind industry who hold an existing GWO manual handling certificate that is approaching expiry or within the renewal window. It is relevant for those carrying out physical job tasks in the wind turbine industry, where lifting, carrying, and handling equipment are part of daily operations. Participants must have completed their original certification before attending the refresher course.

  • Participants will refresh their understanding of manual handling techniques and how to apply correct handling methods in the workplace. The course emphasises identifying aspects of tasks that could increase risk and applying risk reduction techniques to prevent injury.

Delegates will also revisit how to identify signs and symptoms of injuries related to poor manual handling techniques, helping them take early action and maintain safe working practices.

    • A valid WINDA ID is required.

    • Safety footwear is required for all practical sessions.

    • A general standard of fitness is required.

    • Photographic ID Card, such as a drivers licence or passport.

  • After successfully finishing the course, participants will receive a GWO-approved Manual Handling certificate, which remains valid for a duration of two years. To maintain their certification, delegates are required to undergo GWO Manual Handling Training again before the certificate's expiration date.

  • Registration and Welcome: The day typically begins with registration, where participants confirm their attendance and receive any necessary training materials or equipment.
Safety Briefing: A safety briefing is conducted to highlight the importance of adhering to safety protocols throughout the training session and in our centre.
Catering: Lunch is not provided for 0.5 day courses.

  • Participants or individuals booking the course are responsible for ensuring that they meet all the necessary prerequisites and provide the required evidence, such as valid certificates for revalidation courses, on the first day of the course.

Failure to fulfill any of these prerequisites may lead to the participant being requested to leave the course. Please note that no refunds will be issued in such cases.

Equipment, PPE and Workplace Safety

Participants will refresh their knowledge of personal protective equipment and how it supports safe manual handling. The course also covers workplace expectations, reporting methods, and the importance of maintaining a safe working environment. Training may also reference how manual handling integrates with other safety areas such as working at height, first aid, and fire awareness.

Certification and Validity

Upon successful completion, participants renew their GWO manual handling refresher certification, which is recorded in WINDA. This ensures continued compliance with GWO basic safety training requirements and allows individuals to continue working safely in the wind turbine environment.
