What is Enhanced First Aid EFA?

Our GWO Enhanced First Aid Training is an essential course designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver effective and immediate lifesaving care in the wind industry. This GWO enhanced first aid programme combines theoretical and practical training to prepare individuals to respond confidently in remote areas and challenging environments such as a wind turbine generator.

The enhanced first aid EFA course is an intermediate level programme that builds on standard first aid by introducing advanced emergency equipment and decision-making techniques. This GWO enhanced first course is specifically designed for those working in the industry, where access to professional emergency rescue teams may be delayed.

The aim is to enable participants to act independently and administer safe and effective care to an ill or injured casualty while waiting for further assistance.

Course Information

GWO Enhanced First Aid is for anyone working in the wind industry. It’s designed to take your basic first aid knowledge further by teaching you how to handle serious medical emergencies like severe injuries, cardiac events, and other critical situations.

On our GWO Enhanced First Aid course, you’ll learn advanced skills like performing CPR, treating major bleeding and fractures, using first aid equipment (including AEDs), and handling medical emergencies like heart attacks and strokes.

The course also focuses on good communication and the most effective way to work as a team in an emergency/life-like setting.

Course Overview and Training Standards

Delivered in accordance with industry training standards, this GWO EFA training ensures participants develop enhanced first aid skills that go beyond basic care. The course focuses on immediate lifesaving and enhanced response techniques, helping individuals save lives in remote locations.

The training includes:

  • Primary and secondary survey assessments

  • Enhanced first aid measures in the correct order

  • Use of advanced emergency equipment and emergency equipment and medical support systems

  • Understanding medical teleconsultation and equipment and medical teleconsultation procedures

  • This course is suitable for any personnel working in the wind industry.

    • Administer Enhanced first aid in accordance with industry standards.

    • Respond effectively to common injuries and medical emergencies in a wind turbine environment.

    • Apply CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) procedures when necessary.

    • Understand the importance of effective communication and coordination in emergencies.

    • Recognise and respond to severe bleeding, shock, and burns.

    • Identify and manage potential hazards related to first aid situations.

    • A valid WINDA ID is required.

    • Safety footwear is required for all practical sessions.

    • A general standard of fitness is required.

    • Photographic ID Card, such as a drivers licence or passport.

  • After successfully finishing the course, participants will receive a GWO-approved First Aid certificate, which remains valid for a duration of two years. To maintain their certification, delegates are required to undergo GWO Enhanced First Aid Training again before the certificate's expiration date.

    • Registration and Welcome: The day typically begins with registration, where participants confirm their attendance and receive any necessary training materials or equipment.

    • Safety Briefing: A safety briefing is conducted to highlight the importance of adhering to safety protocols throughout the training session and in our centre.

    • Catering: Lunch will be provided to all delegates.

  • Participants or individuals booking the course are responsible for ensuring that they meet all the necessary prerequisites and provide the required evidence, such as valid certificates for revalidation courses, on the first day of the course. Failure to fulfill any of these prerequisites may lead to the participant being requested to leave the course. Please note that no refunds will be issued in such cases.

  • The course includes practical training designed to build confidence in applying aid techniques and enhanced first aid measures. Through realistic scenarios, participants develop the ability to assess, treat, and support an injured casualty.

    Key learning outcomes include:

    • Applying aid measures to save lives

    • Using advanced emergency equipment effectively

    • Delivering lifesaving and enhanced first interventions

    • Supporting casualties with further possible medication where appropriate

    This hands-on approach ensures participants gain the skills required to administer safe and effective care.

Working in Remote Areas

A key element of enhanced first aid is providing assistance in remote areas. This includes delivering aid measures and giving assistance in remote areas using advanced emergency equipment.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Give assistance in remote environments

  • Deliver safe effective and immediate care using advanced equipment

  • Use medical teleconsultation to support decision-making

  • Manage ongoing care and provide ongoing care until evacuation

This focus ensures participants can maintain normal function and stabilise casualties in isolated wind turbine settings.
